A man was left with 30 per cent burns in Richmond on Wednesday after trying to tackle a fire.

London Fire Brigade was called to a garden blaze in Berwyn Road at about 3.40pm and crews from Feltham and Kingston fire stations attended the scene.

On arrival they found trees. a shed and a fence on fire, and a male casualty in his 50s had sustained injuries.

It is believed the occupant of a house noticed the fire had got out of control and spread to his shed and tried to extinguish it with a garden hose.

Watch manager Peter Molloy said: "The fire involved a large waste container, a tree and a fence and a male sustained moderately serious burns.

"He was treated by London Fire Brigade crews prior to the arrival of the London Ambulance Service, who took him to hospital."

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said they were called at 3.53pm and sent two ambulances to the scene.

She said: "He was taken, as a priority, to West Middlesex Hospital."

The fire was brought under control by 4.28pm.

London Fire Brigade has warned about the dangers of leaving garden waste to burn unsupervised and urged people to build bonfires clear of buildings, sheds, fences and hedges.
