A Twickenham street was evacuated after police found firearms and ammunition in an empty house.

Police made the discovery of "a number of firearms" and "a quantity of ammunition" at a home in Grimwood Road, about 12pm on Monday, February 16.

Officers secured the house overnight before continuing their search today and on a second search of the large, empty house, police said they found further ammunition.

A cordon was put in place as a precaution at about 11am and residents were evacuated from their homes.

A resident, who did not want to be named, said: "My wife was at home and was told they needed to leave the house. They had about 10 minutes.

"She said she was told a bomb was found and we assumed it must be something like a WWII bomb.

"There was a gathering at All Hallows Church. My wife was told it would be for up to four hours."

Ruth Arnold, who lives in the road, said: "It was all very scary. They just knocked on the door and said we had to get out of the house.

"My husband is in a wheelchair so we had to get him in it and out of the house straight away."

Her daughter, Ruth, 18, said she found out what had happened on Twitter.

She added: "People said it was a gas leak at first then police said they found firearms in an empty house.

"It's had a sold sign on it for a while."

Whitton Road was also closed while police investigated.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the cordon was removed shortly after 1.30pm today and enquiries are ongoing.

No arrests have been made and police said there was nothing to indicate the incident was terrorist related.
