Two robbers armed with an axe broke into a Whitton jewellers before escaping on a moped this morning.

One of the masked thieves stormed into L.Guess Jeweller, in Whitton High Street,  at 10.44am, stuffed watches and jewellery into a bag before jumping back on the bike outside.

Owner Mark Guess, who chased the intruders into the road, said though he was still taking stock but he believed between £10,000-£20,000 worth of watches and a large diamond solitaire ring woth £15,000 had been stolen.

He said: “They came up on a moped, kicked the door open, axe in hand and it all happened within about 60 seconds.

“I ran after him and nearly got him. He had an axe and our initial thought was 'it’s not a gun, which is handy'.”

Mr Guess has worked at the family-run jewellers for 25 years, and said he was last robbed nine years ago.

He said: “It’s just one of those things. It’s the noise and the shock more than anything.”
