A compliance assistant and a team of huskies are braving -40C conditions in Lapland this month to raise money for a Hampton Hill charity.

Samuel Newman, 26, is travelling to Kiruna in Sweden on Friday, January 30, for a five-day expedition across the icy terrain with a four-dog team, and hopes to raise more than £3,000 for African Revival, a charity devoted to improving education for children in Uganda and Zambia.

Mr Newman, who works for A&A in Hampton Hill and has already raised £2,500 for the charity, said he was looking forward to the challenge.

He said: "I’m winging it a bit in terms of preparation, but I play a lot of sport so am quite physically fit. Sledding demands a lot of core strength, so hopefully I will be OK.

"Facing the cold will be the toughest part. In the day it will be -20C and at night it will drop down to -40C. I’ve bought lots of cold weather gear and thermals."

Mr Newman, who has also organised a mufti-day at his office for when he gets back, said he was told it would be vital to put the huskies first during the expedition.

He said: "You have to feed the dogs first thing in the morning, two hours before you can set off, so that will be hard.

"You are responsible for your own four-husky team, cleaning their mess and looking after them.

"They’re pretty wild, tough dogs and all they want to do is run."
