A brave runner has completed one of the world's most gruelling challenges to raise money for those affected by HIV and Aids in Zimbabwe.

Aidan Bruynseels, 25, from Twickenham, ran the Royal Parks Foundation Ultra Marathon, taking in 50km of London's riverside sights, including Richmond Park and Bushy Park.

He completed the race in six hours and 10 minutes to raise funds for charity Progressio, for whom he volunteers.

Mr Bruynseels, who hopes to train as a teacher, spent 10 weeks in the Honde Valley, Zimbabwe, in 2010 as part of the government-funded development programme International Citizen Service (ICS).

Working alongside local volunteers, he helped educate people about HIV and Aids and support those affected by the virus.

He said: "I was struck by the resilience of people in Zimbabwe in the face of adversity.

"The experiences you have when volunteering are some of the most humbling and challenging in comparison to everyday life in the UK."

He has raised £970 of his £1,500 fundraising target. To donate, visit justgiving.com/Aidan-Bruynseels.
