Richmond will fall silent on Sunday to remember fallen servicemen and women.

War veterans will come together with residents, councillors and community groups to commemorate those killed fighting for their country, along with laying wreaths of red Remembrance Day poppies at war memorials across the borough.

In the centenary year of the outbreak of World War I, a number of Remembrance Day services will be held on Sunday, November 9.

A two-minute silence will take place to remember British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women who lost their lives in the two world wars and other later conflicts.

The mayor of Richmond Councillor Jane Boulton will attend the Twickenham service in Radnor Gardens along with Sir Ken Knight, deputy lieutenant, Judge Nicholas Price, Gillian Norton, CEO of Richmond Council and representatives of HMS Richmond.

Coun Boulton said: "Remembrance Sunday has always been important to me, even more so this year as we commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

"By remembering those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, we can enjoy our freedom. We need to ensure future generations never forget."

MPs Zac Goldsmith and Vince Cable will also attend services in Richmond, Twickenham, Hampton and East Twickenham.

Dr Cable said: "The loss of life in the trenches of the First World War was staggering; the last major war in which soldiers died in much greater numbers than civilians.

"But we should think of those who lost their lives not just as big numbers but as individuals who were sons and fathers."
