The sun shone in Twickenham as crowds gathered to watch soldiers from the Royal Military School and the Corps of Army Music parade today.

People of all ages lined the streets as the procession travelled from York House, along York Street and King Street before reaching its end in Church Street.

Children waved their Union Flags with enthusiasm to greet the 250-strong procession marching through the town centre.

Councillor David Marlow said: “I very much enjoyed the parade – it really does demonstrate what we can do here in Twickenham.

“It was great to see the crowds giving them such an excellent welcome.”

It was held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Corps of Army Music, which is based at Kneller Hall, which was formed on September 1, 1994.

This is the first year the parade has been publicised to encourage people to come and join in the fun and it is exercising the Royal Military School of Music’s freedom of the borough, granted in 2007.

Bruce Lyons, Twickenham Town Business Association chairman, said: “We have tried to make Church Street look the part for the parade.

“Everybody said I put all the flags up because of the Scottish referendum.”

Spectator Julia Jones, from Twickenham, said:”It was lovely and a good turnout of people too, it is important to support the troops.”

Trevor Baylis, who lives on Eel Pie Island, said he was impressed with the parade and it reminded him of his national service.

The 84-year-old inventor said: “It took me back to my national service days when I was a physical training instructor with the Royal Sussex regiment – I still remember my number, 236487402.

“Today took me back down memory lane.”

The celebrations finished with a performance from the Band of the Irish Guards on the riverside, in front of the Barmy Arms pub, where they played The Great Escape and New York, New York among their repertoire.

Frank Bown, 78, travelled across from Epsom to watch the parade.

He said: “I try to come to most freedom parades, I thought this morning was very good.”
