Neighbours of Twickenham station expressed their frustration over noisy Network Rail night work.

Network Rail and Richmond Council representatives got a grilling at the meeting on Wednesday night, ahead of three consecutive weekends of through-the-night work this month as part of platform-level improvements prior to the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

The meeting on Wednesday did not cover future Solum Regeneration works, with a public meeting on that coming soon.

Riz Hanid, scheme project manager at Network Rail, said alternative accommodation was being arranged for those directly affected by the noise.

He said: “There are a couple of hotels in Teddington, including the Lensbury Club, and also one in Richmond.

“As a last resort, we were thinking about rooms away from the station in the Travelodge near the station.”

He said it was not “usual Network Rail policy” to offer alternative accommodation and the company would not provide financial compensation for those unable to leave their homes.

For the first two weeks, work is due to begin when contractor Osborne takes possession of Twickenham station at 1am on Saturdays.

The company will remain on site until 4am the following Monday, but project manager Wayne Sheppard made an “informal promise” work would not continue beyond 9pm on the Sundays. He said the only alternative was for eight weeks of midweek works.

Twickenham Riverside Councillor Susan Chappell described the offer of alternative accommodation as a “huge step forward”.

She said: “Council officers have got alternative accommodation for residents and Network Rail had to listen.

“As a ward councillor, I want them to go even further, but one thing we have to make sure is that Network Rail remembers people live in those houses.

“It must not be an excuse to up noise levels and the council is working hard to make sure there are no breaches.”

Another concern was that of home security if houses were left empty.

A spokesman for Mary’s Terrace Residents’ Association said: “Fingers are crossed that accommodation arrangements are worked out.

“Not everyone is going to be happy and we hope the guarantee from Osborne over finishing on Sunday evening is kept.”

The work is due to continue from September 20 to 22 and September 27 before further work on November 9.

The station will be closed on those days and there will be no service between Richmond and Feltham or Richmond and Teddington, with diversions via Hounslow and rail replacement bus services in operation.
