Street improvements in the borough have been "neglected" by Richmond Council while attention is thrust on to the upgrade of Twickenham town centre, a resident claims.

Pavements in Cross Deep, just a stone’s throw from where major improvement works have been carried out, have become "increasingly more dangerous" with fears for older and less physically able people who use them.

Maureen Beaumont, who lives in Thames Eyot, said: "The pavements have been getting worse in the past five years. Some years ago I had a bad fall because of this and last week I tripped but managed to save myself."

Mrs Beaumont said at the last count, there were more than 90 cracked, broken or misaligned paving stones of about 110 on the portion of pavement at the entrance of Thames Eyot.

Despite raising the issue with councillors in February this year, Mrs Beaumont said she received no response or acknowledgement and no works had been carried out to make the area safe.

She added: "How can councillors possibly say that they represent the residents in a community when they blatantly ignore the concerns of those of the electorate who contact them?

"Perhaps we have to wait for expensive and time consuming legal actions against the council and its officers for improvements to be made."

Councillor Stephen Speak, cabinet member for highways and streetscene, said: "The pavements in Cross Deep will be repaired during September thanks to the council’s heavy investment in funding pavement and road repairs."

The repairs will be in addition to the council’s roads and pavements fund which is allocated to roads and pavement repairs across the borough, Coun Speak said.

He added: "The budget for pavement repairs in Richmond is one of the largest in London and the council will continue to invest in the borough’s pavements and roads because we know how important it is to our residents."

Broken paving stones can be reported thorough the council’s website at richmond.gov.uk/streets_fault_reporting.
