As crowds gathered at Stonehenge to mark the longest day of the year, Kew had its own offering for people wanting to enjoy the outdoors.

More than 10,000 guests attended the Kew Fete on Saturday, June 21, to enjoy the festival atmosphere on Kew Green.

Visitors tucked into a varied choice of street food, shopped from a range of more than 100 stalls and enjoyed all the attractions of the vintage fairground, sideshows and petting farm.

Bear, a Russian black terrier, was handed the winning rosette in the dog show by surprise celebrity judge newsreader Sophie Raworth, who replaced Emmerdale star Katherine Dow Blyton, who could not make the fete.

The BBC newsreader, who stepped in at the last minute, said: "I was coming to the fete anyway, so I was happy to help out. I love dogs so I had a brilliant afternoon."

This year’s fete raised more than £12,000 to be shared among various charities including Kew Community Trust, Spear, the Holly Lodge Centre and the Richmond Foodbank.

Chairman of the Kew Midsummer Fete committee Michael Glazebrook said: "In this, our fifth year, we hoped to take the total raised for local charities to more than £50,000.

"We’re still counting but it looks like we’ve easily passed that mark - it’s a wonderful result.

"Many thanks to all the volunteers who made it happen and also to our sponsors Richmond Vets, Taylor Wimpey, Fuller’s, Dexters, Honda Chiswick and Kew Park Rangers. It’s been a fantastic day."
