Students from Hampton Court Palace’s Royal School of Needlework embroidered jumpers for Marks and Spencer’s latest celebrity campaign.

The second year students from the University for the Creative Arts’ hand embroidery degree sewed their hearts out for the retailer’s Love, Mum campaign.

The joint campaign, with Oxfam, sees celebrity mothers Joanna Lumley, Abbey Clancy and Zoe Ball raise money for mothers living in poverty around the world.

It is part of M&S “shwopping” initiative that calls on people to “shwop” not bin unwanted children’s wear by donating clothes to be re-sold, re-used or recycled by Oxfam.

Students involved were Charis Bailey, Ruby Le Galle and Lottie Small, who project-managed the commission and used their skills to trace out and satin stitch the jumpers in pure wool yarn.

Miss Bailey said: “It’s really exciting to be a part of such a high profile campaign with known brands and celebrities.

“I enjoyed the project and working with a commission like this gave us a real insight into potential careers. The work is something to be proud of and I’m grateful that I had the chance to be a part of it.”

Course leader Angie Wyman said: “We’re thrilled that our students can participate in such a high profile live commission like this.

“It’s a brilliant cause and a great opportunity for them to learn more about the industry. Our degree students continue to be recognised and called upon by major fashion houses and high street brands, bringing the uniqueness of traditional hand embroidery to contemporary design.”
