Richmond’s First World War heritage will be explored as part of an exhibition funded by a Heritage Lottery grant.

Richmond Council’s arts service was awarded the £22,500 grant on Tuesday, February 18, for a project called In their Footsteps: Richmond’s First World War.

The project will be part of the council’s four-year commemoration of the First World War centenary.

Children and young people will work alongside the Orleans House Gallery team to explore, interpret and share stories relating to the borough during the First World War.

Young people will visit different heritage sites, work with collectors, research archives, online records, and meet with local people to uncover real life stories.

Cabinet member for culture, Councillor Gareth Evans, said: “The stories chosen by young people will introduce a wider audience to Richmond’s rich but relatively undocumented First World War Heritage.

“This will be a fantastically rewarding project and I hope as many young people from across the borough take part in it.”

The exhibition will be held at Orleans House Gallery, on Twickenham Riverside, from August to November.
