Big bang bonanza at Richmond Theatre this weekend

Richmond and Twickenham Times: Great sounds: The Glenn Miller Orchestra Great sounds: The Glenn Miller Orchestra

A big band founded by the former musical director of Strictly Come Dancing will play live in Richmond after 25 years of touring.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra was put together by veteran musical entertainer Ray McVay in conjunction with Glenn Miller Productions in New York in 1988.

McVay approached the offices of the Glenn Miller estate 25 years ago, seeking an arrangement to operate a Glenn Miller Orchestra in the UK and has since enjoyed great success.

McVay, the orchestra’s director, keeps shows fresh while not forgetting that Glenn Miller wrote some huge hits regular patrons demand are performed year after year.

Audiences which associate big band music with line-ups including five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones and a lot of noise will not be disappointed but are promised even more.

McVay, a passionate lover of Glenn Miller’s music, wanted to give people the chance to hear live some of Glenn’s finer arrangements so will present shows with the Glenn Miller Strings.

The show also features the harmonies of the Moonlight Serenaders, the vocals of Catherine Sykes and Colin Anthony plus Ray Wordsworth with the swinging jazz band, The Uptown Hall Gang.

As well as the Miller favourites mentioned above audiences will hear songs by popular artists and bands of the era including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Benny Goodman.
