The former mayor of Richmond has handed more than £13,500 to the Horse Rangers Association.

Councillor Rita Palmer presented the cheque to the charity, which was one of her causes during her year in office alongside the Poppy Factory, which received a similar sum.

The Barnes councillor supported the charity after meeting an inspirational member of 35 years.

She said: “Both of my charities are very close to my heart and there’s nothing better than to meet someone who’s involved.

“I’ll never forget Lorraine Harmes - she was the key to opening the door to the Horse Rangers Association for me.”

Coun Palmer presented the cheque at the charity’s drill hall at the Royal Mews, Hampton Court Road, on Thursday, January 30, enjoyed a tour of the stables and met horses, staff and volunteers.

The Horse Rangers Association supports the personal development of children and young people, regardless of background or ability, by teaching them to ride and look after horses.
