Richmond has been awarded more than £200,000 by the Mayor of London and Transport for London (TfL) to improve cycling in the borough.

The money is part of a £17m budget being shared out among all London boroughs.

Hundreds of additional bike racks will be installed throughout Richmond and cyclists will benefit from more cycle training schemes.

Richmond Council cabinet member for highways Councillor Chris Harrison said: “The council welcomes the Mayor of London and Transport for London’s funding, which will be used to deliver significant cycling improvements across Richmond.

“Richmond is in the top two boroughs in Greater London for the proportion of all journeys taken by bike, and this funding will help us to build on this strong cycling base.”

The £212,000 will be distributed into different investments, with £60,000 for bike racks, £2,000 for safer cycling training schemes, £6,000 towards cycle grants for schools and £1,000 for cycling strategy.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “As part of my cycling vision, we are engaging in a vast £1bn programme of improvements to transform cycling in London.

“Making some of this money available directly to the boroughs will help ensure that cycling developments reach communities across the capital.”
