People of Barnes and its visitors will be the first in the borough to see a planted urban meadow installed.

The meadow will be created at Small Profits Dock - the grass area south of the Leg of Mutton in Lonsdale Road.

Overgrown shrubs will be removed and new beds will be created as part of Richmond Council’s uplift programme.

Cabinet member for environment Councillor Pamela Fleming said: “The new planting at Small Profits Dock will create a green space for everyone to enjoy.”

Opposition spokesman for environment Councillor Martin Elengorn said although it was difficult to understand how an urban meadow fits in to a borough the council believes is composed entirely of villages, it was good meadows were being sown.

He said: “It is important that all or most of the plants are of native species to support local biodiversity.”
