Hampton Court Palace’s chapel filled with the sounds of an organ for an international performer’s recital.
James O’Donnell, organist and master of the choristers at Westminster Abbey, played the recently overhauled Shrider-Hill Organ to an audience of more than 300 people on Thursday, November 28.
The organ was commissioned in 1710 and completed in 1712 by Christopher Shrider.
It was restored by Harrison and Harrison between April and July and cost £210,000, which was rasied by the Choral Foundation with help from Historic Royal Palaces.
Mr O’Donnell said: “I am delighted to have been asked to give the inaugural concert on this beautifully-restored instrument.
“It is particularly rewarding to be able to play music dating from the early eighteenth century on pipes from the 1712 instrument, giving exactly the right sounds.”
