A Twickenham man pushed his body to the limit for 10 gruelling challenges to raise money in memory of his mother.

Rob McCargow, of Chudleigh Road, lost his mother, Cathy, to motor neurone disease 10 years ago.

The 36-year-old committed a whole year to complete 10 challenges and raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The challenges began in May when the recruitment director ran 62 miles from London to Brighton and finished on Sunday when he completed the Aldershot Grim Challenge, an eight-mile run through thick mud.

He said: "It has been very challenging but the reason for going mad is I wanted to do something bigger than before in memory of my mum.

"It had to be something that was going to encourage people to put their hands into their pockets."

Mr McCargow also took part in the Olympic-distance London Triathlon, the Great North Run and the Royal Parks Half Marathon and raised more than £5,000.

Mr McCargow said he was still recovering from the last challenge but said his hard graft was worth it to help the charity that supported his mother, a former NHS nurse.

He said: "It is a terrible disease - the body wastes away while you mind stays intact. It is a cruel illness.

"A few months before she died, we took my mum sailing on a ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

"One of my fondest memories is of seeing her being lifted up in her wheelchair into the crow's nest of the ship and taking in the view."
