Brave soldiers who fought in the First World War will be commemorated across the borough as the council sets aside almost a quarter of a million pounds to mark the war.
Next year will mark 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War, which claimed more than 16m lives.
The focus of the four-year £240,000 programme, which will run from 2014 to 2018, will be on remembering those who fought in the war, educating future generations on the war, documenting the borough’s part in it and raising cash for servicemen and women.
Councillor Gareth Evans, cabinet member for culture, said: “It is fitting that we remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy the freedoms and liberties we have today.
“We will mark the centenary of this momentous occasion with pride, reflection and respect here in Richmond.
“We will leave a legacy for younger generations so they will never forget the price that was paid by all involved.”
