Churchill's cigars go under the gavel in Barnes
Cigars belonging to Winston Churchill sold for thousands at an auction in Barnes last month.
The auction, held at the Old Sorting Office Arts Centre, saw the lot collected by a former charlady at 10 Downing Street which included a picture of Churchill and letters sell for £2,800.
But perhaps the surprise of the day came when a collection of African tribal artefacts, estimated between £1,000 and £2,000, sold for £8,700.
Auctioneer Simon Danciger said: “Other impressive lots were a mirror which once belonged to Lord Nelson which sold for £2,360 and a Chinese watercolour on silk which sold for £2,000 against an estimate of just £100 to a telephone bidder from China - an exciting day.”
