In the second of a series of musical tributes to the legendary Eel Pie Club, bands illustrating the musical heritage of the venue and the inspirational effect on young musicians will play at Tribute to Eel Pie Island.

Tribute to Eel Pie Island featuring Birdwood and Kieran Daly will be held on Thursday, September 5, and audiences can enjoy an all-star combination of four bands that played on Eel Pie Island in the 1960s.

Birdwood is made up of members from the Birds, the Artwoods, the Downliners Sect and the Strawbs. The band features vocalist, Ali Mackenzie of the Birds (which in the 1960s also featured Ronnie Wood on guitar), guitarist Derek Griffiths of the Artwoods (which featured Art Wood on vocals and Jon Lord on keyboards), Keith Grant of the Downliners Sect on bass, Chris Parren of the Strawbs on keyboards and Mark Freeman (Rollin’ Stoned and Art Wood All-Stars) on drums.

They will be joined by special guests, Don Craine, from the Downliners Sect, and Alan Glen, from the Yardbirds.

Talented 17-year-old star Kieran Daly, from Twickenham, will join the music greats with his indie/acoustic/folk act. He is currently working on an album.

Gina Way, of the current Eel Pie Club, says: “Twickenham is blessed with a wealth of young musicians, most of whom must have been influenced in some way by the musicians who played on Eel Pie Island in the 1960s.

“The early 1960s saw the transition from jazz to rhythm ‘n’ blues and the late 1960s saw that from rhythm ‘n’ blues to classic rock.”

The gig will be followed by a question and answer session with the musicians.
