Elmbridge schools celebrated their GCSE results today with some great achievements for students borough-wide.

 

Headmaster of Claremont Fan Court Senior School in Esher Jonathan Insall-Reid, said the school was delighted with its GCSE results and he congratulated all year 11 pupils who achieved a 99 per cent pass rate. 47 per cent of these were at A* and A and 80 per cent at A* to B.

He said: “These successful results are thoroughly deserved and demonstrate the diligent work of our pupils and teaching staff."

 

Hinchley Wood School students have achieved 88 per cent of five or more A* - C grades this year, which is an increase of five per cent on 2012.

Head teacher Steven Poole said: “We are delighted and very proud of how much the students have achieved, particularly as these results show another year on year improvement in a climate of national decline.”

There was a number of outstanding achievements, including Kerry Alderson and Catherine Page with 10 A*s and one A and Abigail Carter, who secured nine A*s, one A and one B Lucas Phelps, who was at first lost for words, eventually managed to say: “I am really pleased, I have achieved everything I wanted – I have three A*s, four As. It means I can do the A-levels I had planned, history, economics, politics and biology.”

At St George’s College in Weybridge this morning, students celebrated after 100 per cent achieved five A*-C grades, with 71 per cent achieving A*- A grades.

There were 40 students who gained A* - A grades, including eight students who achieved straight A*s. High-flyers were Ellie Peel who got 10 A*s plus an A grade in an A/S-level maths module and a French DELF certificate, and Rosa Minney, who achieved 10A*s and a French DELF certificate.

Ellie said: “I’m hoping to go into finance and am looking forward to focusing on the subjects I’ve chosen for A-level, particularly maths. I’ve been captain of netball, so I’m hoping to continue my sport too.”

The college improved its percentage of A* grades from last year’s 34 per cent to this year’s 40 per cent. Headmaster Joe Peake was delighted at the performance of his GCSE students.

He said: “Our students have gained an impressive 71 per cent A* - As reflecting their dedication and ability. We look forward to their continued success in the sixth form.”

Notre Dame School in Cobham saw an increase in their A and A* grades for the fourth year running with a three per cent in increase in A* grades.

Principal David Plummer said: “Following on from the success of last week's A level results in which 21 per cent of grades were A* this year's GCSE cohort has done us equally proud. Again NDS has bucked the national trend improving A and A* on last year teachers parents and the girls are delighted. All down to excellent teaching and successful partnership between home and school.”

Student Emma Appleton, who achieved 11 A* grades, said: “I'm so happy. My determination and hard work has paid off. Looking forward to studying French, history and maths, drama or English at A-level. My ambition is to study law at university.”

Student Izzy Stewart, who achieved three A* grades, six A grades and one B, said: “I'm really happy, never thought I would do this well. I am going to study history, philosophy & ethics & biology and economics. I'd really like to become a pilot.

Rydens Enterprise School and Sixth Form College (RES) celebrated record-breaking results this year, marking a significant improvement on previous results.

63 per cent of students gained five A*-C grades including English and maths with the percentage gaining five A*-C grades across all subjects reaching 89 per cent for 2013.

The number of students gaining A*or A grades also increased this year to 14 per cent with 18 students gaining eight or more A or A* grades.

A school spokeswoman said: “Congratulations to all our students, they have focussed on their examinations and reaching the very best results they possibly can on a personal level and thoroughly deserve the success they have achieved.”

At Reed’s School in Cobham, a third of the year group gained at least seven A* or A grades.

Headmaster David Jarrett, said: “We took the decision to switch to the more challenging iGCSE in several subjects, most notably science, in order to prepare our students better for A-levels and beyond and the results have been good - these students have achieved similar grades overall to past years whilst sitting harder exams, which is highly commendable.”

In total, 55 per cent of entries were awarded A* or A grades and 98 per cent got A*-C grades.

Outstanding students Joseph Leong-Son, Fraser Atkinson, Matthew Callender, Will White and Edmund Wilkinson all obtained a clean sweep of at least eight A* grades.

Joseph, who got nine A* grades, said: “I’m incredibly happy – I revised loads and worked hard and it’s paid off.”

Matthew, who achieved eight A*s and one A, said: “I’m really happy with my results and pleased that my hard work in the difficult subjects paid off. I’m now ready to start my A levels”.

Michael, who got six A* and three A grades, said: “I’m very pleased with the results I got – they were better than I expected and I’m glad I worked so hard.”

Heathside School, in Weybridge, welcomed its year 11 students to collect their results today, as they celebrated their best ever results.

82.4 per cent of students gained five GCSEs at grade A*-C, including English and maths. This is an increase of 7.4 per cent compared with 2012 and an increase of 16.4 per cent since 2011.

Principal Anne Cullum said: “These outstanding results reflect the determination and effort made throughout two years of GCSE study by our students. The governors and I thank our dedicated staff who have continued to work hard to keep our students enthused and working to their full potential in order to achieve these very high standards. We would like to also thank the parents who have been instrumental in supporting both the students and the school. I wish all our students every success in the future.”

Their highest performing student gained a total of 15 A* or equivalent GCSE passes.

 

Students at Esher C of E High School are celebrating their success with GCSE results rising to 62 per cent of students gaining five or more A*-C grades – which is the highest set of results for the school.

Students achieving top grades of A* and A also rose, with nine students achieving 10 or more A* or A grades each.

Headteacher Simon Morris, said: “These results have been achieved through hard work and dedication by the students together with the committed and professional support of their teachers. We congratulate our students and wish them all every success with their future studies and careers.”

Highest achiever in the year was Hannah Stevenson from West Molesey who got 11 A* grades and one A, closely followed by Kate Manley from Hersham and Tom Burridge from West Molesey achieving nine A* and three A grades.

All of these students will be continuing their education at Esher College. Hannah, who will be studying English literature, philosophy, Spanish and drama and has her sights firmly set on studying Law at university, said: “I am overwhelmed, it’s great to know that all those hours of study paid off.”

An 100 per cent pass rate at grades A* to B was celebrated at The Susan Roberts Academy (SRA) of Performing Arts today.

Drama students all achieved A* and A grades this year, and Dance students all grades A and B. Principal Susan Roberts said: “I am thrilled with this year’s outstanding marks, especially when you take into account that all these students have achieved this studying outside of school. The academy is not selective and prides itself on the fact that the standards within our teaching faculty are extremely high and our students are committed and clearly dedicated. The future of our younger generation is paramount and the young community of SRA never ceases to make me so very proud.”
