It proved a disappointing tournament for Surbiton’s four internationals playing in the Men’s EuroHockey Nations Championship II at the Hockeystadion in Vienna last week.

Wales, with David Kettle as their main goalkeeper, lost 7-2 to France on Monday and 2-1 to Azerbaijan on Tuesday, before drawing 1-1 on Thursday with Scotland, who had Alan Forsyth, Chris Grassick and Nick Parkes in their squad.

The Scots did somewhat better in their other two pool A fixtures, losing 3-0 to Azerbaijan on Monday but then beating France 4-1 on Tuesday with Forsyth, signed by Surbiton from Glasgow club Kelburne during the close season, scoring two of the goals.

But Thursday’s 1-1 draw meant that Scotland finished third and Wales fourth in the four-team pool, taking that scoreline into the weekend’s fifth to eighth place classification pool C.

In the pool, Wales's initial 4-0 loss to the Ukraine, followed by a 5-1 win over Italy by Scotland, with Forsyth notching another brace, meant that, subject to massive goal-difference reversals in their final games, Wales were doomed to relegation but Scotland would avoid that fate.

There were no shock scorelines on Sunday however and the Welsh did manage to chalk up their first victory of the tournament, beating Italy 5-3.

Scotland then drew 2-2 with the Ukraine. These two results meant that the Welsh ended up one below their tournament ranking of sixth, so they are relegated to the Championships III for 2015.

Although the Scots stay in the Championships II for two years time, they disappointingly ended up two places below their tournament ranking of fourth and missed out on one of the top two qualifying spots for the Championships I, which are being held in London in two years' time.
