Changes to London policing will see reduced opening hours of some of the borough’s front counters, it has been confirmed.

As part of Boris Johnson’s three year plan, which saw the most extensive public consultation ever carried out into policing in London, people will be able to meet their police at Lowther Primary School in Barnes outside of normal hours.

The contact point, designed for people to meet the police face-to-face for non-urgent matters, will be open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7pm to 8pm and Saturdays from 2pm to 3pm.

If more contact points are needed in future, the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (Mopac) may consider Sainsbury’s in Hampton and the civic centre in Twickenham as options.

Sovereign Gate’s front counter will be operate under reduced opening hours of noon to 8pm Monday to Friday, while Teddington’s 100 per cent volunteer front desk will open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm.

The front counter at Twickenham police station will remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Met Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said: “I want the Met to be the best police service for Londoners. The changes we’re making will help us to fight crime and patrol the streets.

“London’s communities are at the heart of what we do. We will have more officers out on the streets, working daily in local neighbourhoods.”

Queens House in Twickenham will provide deployment facilities until June 2014, but the lease on the building may be terminated if teams can be moved.

Safer neighbourhood teams will base their operations at the police stations and at Lowther Primary School.

Borough commander Clive Chalk said: “We have already seen the benefit of the opening of the new station office at Sovereign Gate in Richmond in anticipation of the closure of the old police station.”

The front counter at Richmond police station closed on February 8 this year, with officers and services slowly moving out throughout the year.
