Darell Primary School, Richmond, moves to the beat of a different drum

Fun with drums: Children enjoyed the workshop Fun with drums: Children enjoyed the workshop

Children at Darell Primary and Nursery School immersed themselves in African culture when they were visited by an African theatre company.

As part of book week at the school, students participated in drumming and storytelling workshops.

Iroko Theatre, which visited the school in Richmond on Wednesday, March 13, is an award-winning company that specialises in teaching through exhibitions, workshops and arts and crafts.

The children learned the different drumming techniques, basic rhythms and cross-rhythms.

They were encouraged to express themselves through music in a relaxed, fun and exciting way with African songs, chants, stories, movements and musical games.

Angela Catlin, who works at the school, said: “It went really well. The group were fantastic. It is part of our book week. The drumming workshop was great – the kids loved it and they got a lot out of it.”
