Stop Means Stop is the message from Richmond upon Thames Council as it launches a new campaign highlighting the dangers children and parents face from drivers failing to hit the brakes at school crossing patrols.

The high-profile publicity campaign, which will include adverts on London's buses, warns motorists that failing to stop for school crossing patrols could see them receive a £1,000 fine and three penalty points or be disqualified from driving.

London councils are working with the police to prosecute people who flout the law and the campaign will remind drivers they must stop when ordered to do so by the patrols.

Councillor David Trigg, cabinet member for traffic, transport and parking, said: "The vast majority of drivers obey the rules of the road but the reckless few who do not are putting their safety, and that of others, at serious risk.

"These patrols play a vital role in ensuring the safety of the borough's young people when they cross the road.

"We will work with the police to come down hard on any motorist caught breaking the law."
