Twickenham MP Vince Cable's grandson in line for Amnesty award

Vince Cable’s grandson is in the running for Amnesty International’s young human rights reporter of the year award.

Ayrton Cable beat 2,500 other children to reach the top 10 of the national competition and will now have his entry judged by a panel of editors, authors and industry professionals.

The 10-year-old Hampton Court House pupil took a picture that highlighted the issue of phone parts being made with unethical and toxic parts in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He said: “I’m very happy to be long-listed in the top ten. I really would like to thank everyone who is helping out with the campaign.

“There is a terrible amount of suffering in the Congo. A fair trade phone would make a huge difference to the nation.”

The top three entries in each of the six categories will be announced in April and the final winner will have their work showcased in central London in June.

Natalie Kavanagh, Ayrton’s art teacher, said: “Ayrton cares passionately about the world we all live in and he is totally committed to making a change to complex and immoral issues that affect us all, but are often masked from our eyes.

“Ayrton’s dream is to stand up and make a difference in this world.”
