Commuters are being warned that journeys could be affected by heavy snow forecast tonight.

South West Trains said it planned to run a normal weekday timetable on all routes this evening and tomorrow but advised passengers that snow and ice may force changes.

A spokesman said the areas expected to be worst hit were lines between Southampton and Portsmouth and between Portsmouth and London via Haslemere and Guildford.

The spokesman said: “In particular, the first trains to run over tracks with large accumulations of snow and ice may need to be cancelled to allow us to ensure these routes are clear and safe to run passenger services.

“There may also be changes in the number of carriages to some services. This is to allow for some trains to be lengthened which reduces the risk of running during icy weather but may mean other services will have a reduced number of carriages.”

Commuters are advised to check their journeys before they travel on journeycheck.southwesttrains.co.uk.

Quite amazing to see that Sussex and Kent were totally covered in snow this morning whilst only a few miles away we had none at all, and not even any frost on the cars.
