Duke of York visits National Physical Laboratory

The Duke of York visited Teddington scientists to find out about their research and its impact on society and the economy.

Prince Andrew enjoyed a tour of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and found out about its work, including climate change and quantum technologies, when he visited on Monday, February 25.

He also visited the laboratory’s microwave antenna facility and the clinical linear accelerator, which provides accurate measurements for radiotherapy used to treat cancer patients.

The visit was part of the duke’s work to promote and support the British science and engineering sectors and he was interested in finding out what impact research had on business and quality of life.

National Physical Laboratory managing director Brian Bowsher said: “It was a great honour to be able to show the Duke of York some of the outstanding work going on at NPL, especially at a time when investment in science and technology is vital for strengthening the UK economy.

“He showed great interest in our research and knowledge of the technical challenges we are working to overcome in areas such as graphene and nanotechnology.

“His Royal Highness was particularly supportive of our work to support SMEs and to grow our business internationally.”
