Young Richmond artists win place in book

Budding artists have won a place in a new book that celebrates talent and creativity in the borough.

Film photographer Stephanie Callaghan Smith worked with schools and parents to capture young artists at work and showcase their pieces in her book, Artists of Richmond.

She said: “I wanted this project to capture the joy and enthusiasm kids show as they express themselves through art.

“I was really delighted to see the level of talent and creativity among local children.

“I remember how much it meant to me as a young artist to receive some encouragement and recognition for my work. So, I hope that being part of the project will spur these talented young people on to work hard and enjoy their art.”

The participants, aged between four and 15, produced work using variety of techniques including painting, drawing, mixed media, dry point etching and sculpture.

The book features an acrylic painting of an apple tree by Felix Chadwick-Histed, 10, who entered a similar piece to the 2012 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

Teddington School pupil Ellen Evans, 12, entered an intricate pencil drawing of someone wearing a carnival mask, inspired by her love for theatre and film.

Keen guitarist, Bethany Perez, 15, created a clay sculpture of a guitar as part of her GCSE art project.
