A convicted child killer has been sentenced to an extra three years in prison after escaping from court.

Richard Kwakye from Twickenham, was jailed for 35 years for the murder of Siariah Letang, a 19-month-old girl from Thornton Heath in July 2011.

The toddler died of smoke inhalation after petrol was poured through the letterbox of her grandmother's home in Camberwell, as the family slept.

When the 39-year-old was brought to Kingston County Court for a family-related matter last June, he managed to escape the court room.

Kwakye injured two security guards with a piece of wood with a screw fixed to the end, before officers managed to catch up with him in St James Road, outside Kingston College.

In December his sentence was increased by three years for escaping lawful custody, two counts of actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

Both Serco and the Ministry of Justice have refused to say how he escaped.
