A fledgling rugby club are ready to tackle a new season after being given a leg up by UK Power Networks through a £250 grant.

Whitton Lions RFC was given the grant through the Team Sport Award scheme, supported by the power company.

The club was founded about 18 months ago to bring the sport to Whitton in south-west London, a town that has never had its own team despite being walking distance from the home of English rugby at Twickenham.

Tom Willis, a UK Power Networks technology development engineer, has been involved in the club for eight months and was keen for it to progress.

He said: “We started very small with few players, no kit and no equipment but now things are starting to come together and the money from UK Power Networks will help enormously. We’ll use the money to buy rucking pads for training sessions.”
