Twickenham fire station looks set to double its cover under plans revealed today.

The station currently has one fire engine, but it could get another as outlined in London Fire Brigade’s (LFB) London Safety Plan.

Richmond borough commander Andy Cane said: “It is good news. It’s got to go through a consultation process, so we can’t say it is definitely going to happen now.”

Official confirmation of the proposals, which saw the planned closure of 12 London fire stations in a bid to save £28.8m in the next two years, will be announced in June.

Mr Cane welcomed the news to Twickenham station when other areas had not fared so well.

Twickenham was one of four stations earmarked for the arrival of another engine, while seven London stations will lose one.

Stations including Clapham, Westminster and Southwark are set for closure, but the LFB’s Commissioner, who published the proposals for the draft plan, insisted response times would not suffer.

The addition of a second fire engine to Twickenham would see response times reduced by an average of 27 seconds per call out.
