Looking back at fight to save view

A book detailing a fight to save the view from Richmond Hill in 1901 has been added to the borough's collection.

Richmond Hill resident Ron Berryman and ex-leader of Richmond Council Councillor David Williams saw a book of cuttings from the fight to save the view - featuring contemporaneous reports - on auction site eBay and decided to buy it.

The duo jointly purchased the item and last week handed it over to the borough's local studies collection.

Local historian John Cloake had asked the then owner if the book could be donated or loaned to the local collection in 1987, and his letter of request was still with the book.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Mayor of London, Brian Paddick, and Conservative candidate Boris Johnson have both said the view from Richmond Hill, which allows a clear sight of St Paul's Cathedral, has been put at risk by Mayor Ken Livingstone and pledged to safeguard its future.

"The view is one of the most magical in the world and Ken's plans threaten to destroy it, along with a dozen others," said Mr Paddick.

"As Mayor, I will restore the full protection to all of London's historic views which Ken has eroded to the benefit of his property developer friends.

"I won't approve applications for buildings which will damage the traditional view lines."

Tony Arbour, who represents the borough on the London Assembly, said: "I have long campaigned with Zac Goldsmith prospective Richmond Park MP, residents and groups to thwart Ken Livingstone's slashing of the viewing corridor from King Henry's Mound.

"This promise from Boris underlines the importance which Conservatives attach to our built environment."
