Councillor welcomes the use of borough facilities for pre-Games training

A number of borough venues named last week as potential sites for pre-games training camps for the London Olympic Games in 2012 has been hailed as a massive boost.

Earlier this month, Twickenham Stadium, St Mary's University College, the Royal Canoe Club in Teddington, a portion of Barn Elms Sports Centre in Barnes and the Bu-Sen martial arts and fitness centre in Twickenham, were listed in the London organising committee's pre-games training camp guide as possible preparation sites.

The guide, which contains more than 600 potential sites, will be circulated to all national Olympic and Paralympic committees, before a decision is made on where teams and individual athletes prepare and acclimatise for London 2012.

St Mary's University will offer facilities for a range of sports including athletics, badminton and basketball, while Twickenham Stadium and Barn Elms will host archery.

Bu-Sen will accommodate judo, taekwondo and wrestling training and the Royal Canoe Club will offer canoeing and kayak flat water facilities.

Councillor John Coombs, Richmond Council cabinet member for youth, culture and leisure, said he was delighted with the news.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for the borough, which will boost the local economy and ensure that the Olympic legacy reaches us too," he said.

Is this the same Council that wants to get rid of the track at Barn Elms?
