Holocaust survivor’s surprise at school play
 |
| Survivor: Eva Schloss (centre) with staff and pupils at Heathland School |
The step sister of Holocaust victim Anne Frank was a special guest at a play performed at the Heathland School on Tuesday.
The play, produced by Nic Careem, tells the story of Eva Schloss with the events leading up to her capture by the Nazis until her eventual release from Auschwitz.
It was performed to an audience of year 10 to upper sixth history of drama students with the use of mixed media and live performance.
Eva lost her brother and father at Auschwitz but she and her mother survived. After the war, her mother married Otto Frank.
The pupils were astounded but pleased when at the end of the show, the actress playing the part of Eva brought the real Eva Schloss on to the stage.
Mr Careem invited the pupils to quiz Eva on her life and how she overcome the difficulties of being a Holocaust victim.
The children laughed when Eva was asked: "Did you know Ann Frank?" Eva responded: "I knew of her but I was a tomboy and Anne was a very posh young lady."
One student said after the show that having the chance to meet Eva "made her story more real".
