Mayor Felicity Barwood was given a lesson on how to save the planet this week, by a bunch of school kids.

Children from Strand-on-the-Green Infant and Junior schools explained to the Mayor how they are helping to rid our roads of congestion and leading the way in saving the planet and themselves.

The pupils have been working together to implement a School Travel Plan as part of a national initiative to get kids active.

The school has been working on the environmentally friendly and fat-fighting plan over the last term with the infants and juniors.

Head teacher Mark Newton, said: "It's Important to take measures to reduce emissions and traffic congestion on the streets, but it's also a terrific way of keeping our kids healthy and showing them the benefits of exercise."

The initiative was set up and funded by Transport for London.

The schools aim to promote healthier and sustainable means of transport for the journey to and from school.

Mr Newton added: "Reduced car travel would alleviate local congestion and parking problems and promote healthier lifestyles.

"The initiatives include improving cycle storage facilities, a car share scheme, walking to school on Wednesdays, Park and Stride and raised community policing of parking."

Both schools were delighted to welcome Mayor Barwood, who listened intently to the school council children who told her all about their parking issues and their solutions.

The mayor officially opened the Scooter Pool for children to borrow scooters and "scoot" to school as an alternative to car travel.
