Personal Overview - The son of the late billionaire financier Sir James Goldsmith he is a well-known figure amongst the top echelons of London society. Although born into privilege he strongly refutes detractors who portray him as a 'hooray' or 'dandy', partly by referring to the acclaim many of his actions have garnered across the world. His journalism is not limited to The Ecologist (a family owned publication) as he has written many articles for The Daily Mail, The Daily Telegraph, Evening Standard and The Observer. His role on the Conservative's Quality of Life Group as Deputy Chairman has been criticised by some fellow Conservatives as too interventionist in nature, seeking as it does to promote the use of green taxes to change personal behaviour. Goldsmith has traced his devotion to Environmental causes back to his childhood fascination with the works of Gerald Durrell and Sir David Attenborough. Strains in his personal life risked his eventual successful election for Richmond Park seat in the run-up to the 2010 General Election, his separation and intended divorce from Sharon, his wife of ten years, was announced in August 2009. He has been openly critical of past proposals to fluoridise water supplies and is a public supporter of hunting.
