CLEARLY chasing some action right slap dab in the middle of the mainstream, Sharleen Spiteri follows up the over produced pop-soul of her solo debut, Melody, with a fairly pointless blast through some of her favourite songs from the movies.
She dabbles unconvincingly in disco with Yvonne Elliman’s 1977 chart-topper If I Can’t Have You from Saturday Night Fever; then has the balls to tackle Billie Holiday’s sublime God Bless the Child. It’s a brave but ultimately ham-fisted stab at a song that requires deft intonation and a sense of purpose.
The Windmills of Your Mind is servicably unspectacular; and Xanadu survives intact (as if anyone cares), but Sound of Silence is given a right good battering.
An unsightly blend of desperation and indulgence then.
