A FEW bars in to this debut album from hotly tipped newcomers Chew Lips and you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve heard the first Depeche Mode album more times than is strictly necessary in one lifetime.
But the recollection of its very slender charms is soon left behind as singer Tigs lets loose her barbed wire vocals and by the time she’s up to her neck in track two, the delectably threatening Play Together, you realise Chew Lips are far more than the latest flame.
With Bat For Lashes producer David Kosten at the helm, there’s a depth to this debut that was missing from comparable works from a year or so ago. Produced in layers, with each one earning its keep, tracks like Karen and Piano Song pump from the heart rather than pulse from the sequencer.
