Just a Song at Twilight, York House
Kathryn Hone
The Richmond chamber choir Cantanti Camerati packed out Clarendon Hall at York House, Twickenham, for three performances of its annual Just a Song at Twilight show last weekend [Match 13-14]. To
counter the economic gloom, the theme of this 33rd year of the popular-music show was "Spread a Little Happiness” after the famous song from the 1929 musical Mr Cinders.
The capacity crowds were treated to feelgood choral numbers such as The Sunny Side of the Street and Sing as We Go, as well as a men’s barbershop version of Yes Sir! That’s My Baby and some excellent solo items including Can’t Help Loving That Man, sung by Janet Jones, Happy Talk, by Kay Cassidy and the impressive Jewel Song from Faust, sung by Rosalind O’Dowd.
The choir, under its musical director Geoffrey Bowyer, also performed an African anthem, Nkosi Sikele Africa, to draw attention to its planned charitable trip to Sierra Leone in October, and raised a total of £673 towards the project, as well as promises of donations of second-hand instruments which will be shipped to the country’s national music academy.
