New play at Leatherhead Theatre will be a "test-bed" for new work New play at Leatherhead Theatre will be a "test-bed" for new work

A rehearsed reading of a play by a Surrey playwright is coming to Leatherhead Theatre.

In Quest of Light: The Battle for Tartuffe by Amanda Lomas will be performed on Wednesday, March 20.

Leatherhead Theatre Repertory Company are putting on the reading in a bid to nurture and showcase talent.

The play explores the impact on playwright Moliere when his comedy Tartuffe was banned in Paris 350 years ago.

Trevor Danby, artistic director of the company, said they discovered the play after a call for scripts in 2012.

He said: "I realised we had found the play which would bring attention back to Leatherhead as a test-bed for new work as it was in the days of the Thorndike."

Actress Dame Sybil Thorndike had supported Leatherhead's influential Thorndike Theatre which opened in 1969 but closed 30 years later.
