It is time to folked at Matthews Yard this week as award winning singer Lucy Ward comes to town, writes Andy Bloss.

The 21-year-old folk singer won Best Newcomer at the BBC Folk Awards in 2012 and is performing a set at Matthews Yard on Friday.

Ward, from Derby, has supported folk artists such as Seth Lakeman, Chris Wood, Tams and Coope, Phil Beer and Dave Swarbrick, before becoming a headline act herself.

The singer has performed at numerous festivals and clubs all over the country and finished the 2011 festival season in style with a standing ovation at the Shrewsbury Folk Festival.

Her debut album Adelphi Has To Fly attracted positive reviews from BBC Radio Two’s Mike Harding, and Verity Sharpe from BBC Radio Three.

The 21-year-old plays the guitar and concertina in her shows. Organisers say her show is a mix of traditional and modern folk songs mixed in with some of her own music.

Lucy Ward, Matthews Yard, Surrey Street, March 8, 8pm, £6-£7, visit ukulele.magix.net/#Home to order tickets, or facebook.com/matthewsyard for more information.
