Soul singer Omar and jazz funk band Shakatak will headline the Purley Festival.

Now in its fifth year the week-long event will be closed by Kent-born singer Omar on July 5, after Shakatak will have rocked Rotary Fields the day before.

The two headliners join a growing list of local and international acts confirmed for the festival.

Omar, who moved to Croydon in 1988, and has released seven albums over a 30-year-career, says: “Having lived in Croydon for most of my life I very much look forward to returning to headline the final day of the Purley Festival 2015.

"It is an excellent community festival and I’m delighted to have been invited to perform.”

Shakatak, founded in 1980, have had two top 10 hits with Nightbirds and Down on the Street.

Jill Saward, lead singer of Saturday evening headliners Shakatak, says: “Shakatak are delighted to be playing this year’s Purley Festival.

"We look forward to entertaining the crowd at this brilliant local festival with all of our classic songs as well as some new tunes.”

Run by volunteers, Purley Festival will boast three music stages and a children’s festival area.

Companies and organisations involved in this year’s event include the Oval Tavern, running the main bar and acoustic stage, and the Brit School, who will manage sound and electrics across the festival site and add their musical talent to proceedings.

Lives Not Knives – a Croydon-based campaign group which raises awareness of the dangers of knife crime and supports young people into education, employment and training – will be running the Soapbox stage.

Festival organiser Fiona Lipscombe says: “To have two terrific headliners in Omar and Shakatak, as well as the strength of the rest of the line-up, goes to show how far Purley Festival has come.

"2015 is shaping up to be the best edition yet and I hope everybody is excited about it as we are.”
