This year marks 100 years since the start of World War I, and it continues to remain an important and powerful historic talking point.
To mark the centenary commemorations, Maggs Latter, former arts development officer at Elmbridge Council, and Glen Kirton, will kick off the first in the Royston Pike lecture series by remembering the forgotten voices of the war.
Latter will tell the story of a young Lieutenant Leonard Keysor, her great uncle, who was one of the 11 Australian soldiers awarded the Victoria Cross during the Gallipoli campaign.
Councillor Jan Fuller, portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said: “Stories from our ancestors who took part in WWI are so moving. Most died so young without fulfilling their dreams. Such tales of heroism and resilience against all odds are terribly humbling.
“Come and listen to Maggs and Glen as they are sharing some of their families’ most poignant memories with us.”
