THE majority of parents seek inspiration from the local area when telling their children stories, according to a new study.

Disney UK carried out the research which showed the 76 per cent of mums and dads’ stories are inspired by the area in which they live.

The filmmaking brand has launched a competition fronted by radio presenter Jamie Theakston to find five regional Winnie the Pooh Laureates to celebrate local history and landmarks.

The competition encourages parents to use their area in stories, just like AA Milne did when creating the Winnie the Pooh stories, and it requires entrants to submit an original 500 word or less story inspired by where they live and featuring Winnie the Pooh and Friends or their own cast of characters.

The prize is the title and the chance to read the story to a gathering crowd at the local Disney Store.
Disney’s study revealed that more than half (52 per cent) of mums and dads feel their community is important to family life, while 35 per cent believe telling local stories encourages children to appreciate where they live, 31 per cent believe it enables a better understanding of the community and 28 per cent see it as a way of passing on local history.

To enter the Winnie the Pooh Laureate competition, visit the Winnie the Pooh UK & Ireland Facebook page – facebook.com/WinniethePoohUKandIreland before December 17.
