Looking to keep in shape? Then try a parkrun near you
Parkruns are organised, free 5km runs that are held weekly throughout the world. Reporter Andy Bloss tried one out.
After buying some nifty new running shoes a couple of weeks ago I thought I better start finding some use for them.
parkrun immediately came to my attention. These are organised 5km runs which are held weekly and are completely free.
They are open to everyone so you do not have to be a Mo Farah to join in.
The events take place in parkland surroundings and people of all abilities are encouraged to take part.
In Croydon there are events held at Lloyd Park, Crystal Palace Park, Riddlesdown and Roundshaw Downs.
Despite a busy week in the newsroom I was up at 8am on Saturday and on my way to the Riddlesdown event for the 9am start.
I have not done much running since my school days so I was a little apprehensive about taking part in the 5k.
But I did not do too badly, clocking a time of 26:56. Although I certainly felt the affects the next day which meant I had to roll down the stairs rather than walk.
I also got beaten by a ten year old. Who said the youth of today are unfit?
If you are looking to get fit and you quite like running through peaceful parkland, then set your alarm for 8am on a Saturday morning and get down to do a parkrun.
Croydon parkruns, every Saturday, 9am, visit parkrun.org.uk to register and to find your nearest event.
