A campaign to save a pub described as a "lifeline" for the community is gaining momentum.

June Fraser called on residents to help save the Worcester Park Tavern, which was put up for sale on May 10, by owners Spirit Pub Company.

The childminder and DJ has collected 300 signatures for a petition and said more online support has been rolling in from people who fear the landmark pub in a prime site near Worcester Park station, could be knocked down for flats.

She said: "It’s going really well which doesn’t really surprise me. I knew there would be support, it’s a very popular, community pub and a lot of people want to try and save it."

The 57-year-old is a regular at the pub, where her daughter-in-law is assistant manager, and said the crowd was friendly with some real characters who depend on it as a social hub.

She said she wouldn’t mind the venue being sold on to another pub company but didn’t want the once "beautiful" building knocked down so was also looking in to blocking applications for change of use.

The pub underwent a £1m revamp in 2002 but has since become dilapidated and run down.

A spokesman for Spirit Pub Company said the Worcester Park Tavern would remain open for the "short term" and the company would update staff on developments.
