It seems Sutton really has got something to laugh about with the launch of its third live comedy club.
The Joke Club makes Sutton United FC its home for its monthly stand-up night, which will showcase established comics alongside promising newcomers.
It kicks off its opening night with some of the cream of the crop from the UK comedy circuit.
Host Miles Crawford will preside over the proceedings. A regular compere at Jongleurs and with more than 25 years’ experience on the circuit, Crawford was approached last year by the football club with the idea of setting up a comedy night.
It came after he staged a benefit gig at O’Neills.
Undaunted by the arrival of two other clubs, Crawford believes his venture will complement Sutton’s burgeoning live comedy scene.
He says: “There’s always room for comedy clubs, whatever level of acts they want to put on. Acts need stages and stage time.
“I think it’s good that there’s a veriety of venues in Sutton. People have got different time schedules, some might prefer to go out on a Thursday, some at the weekend.
“We’ll have established comedians and also profile a couple of new acts going round hte circuit giving them open slots.”
Appearing on the Joke Club’s launch night are king of the ad-lib Kevin McCarthy, Martin Beaumont and Wayne the Weard.
