Best newcomer: Diane Spencer Best newcomer: Diane Spencer

Surbiton comic Diane Spencer was named best newcomer at the Chortle Awards last night.

She beat Henry Ginsberg, Iain Stirling and Tim Shishodia to the award which was voted for by the public.

"I am utterly delighted," she said.

"To be nominated in the first place was brilliant, but actually winning...I'm thrilled.

"Thank you everyone for your support, I am over the moon!"

Previous winners of the award include Sarah Millican, Jack Whitehall and Rhod Gilbert.

Spencer only began gigging on the UK comedy circuit 12 months ago after returning from four years living in New Zealand, where she was nominated as best newcomer in 2007 and best female comedian in 2009 at the New Zealand Comedy Guild.
